A team of doctors at the Singapore General Hospital, led by Tong Ming Chuan (Dr), performed the first heart transplant in Singapore on 6 July 1990, creating a milestone in local medical history. The donor heart came from a construction worker, Ong Soon, 41, who died in an industrial accident, while the recipient was Wee Soo Hup, a 59-year-old retired information officer who was suffering from terminal heart disease.
