Tampines Expressway (TPE), connects the junction of Seletar Expressway (SLE) and Central Expressway (CTE) at Yio Chu Kang in the north to the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE) at Changi in the east. Built at a cost of $120 million, construction of the 14.4 km expressway was completed in 1996. It is an important link between the new towns of Pasir Ris, Tampines, Punggol and Seletar.

This is a good piece of history on TPE. However, I do hope someone could help to clarify for me these data: TPE, 14.4km, completed in 1996, was built at a cost of S$120million. On the other hand, KPE, 12km, was built at a cost of S$1.8billion. Is there a mistake in the construction cost indicated for TPE even though they were built in different decade?
Hi,
The hike in the building cost of KPE is largely due to the high cost of building the subterranean section of the expressway. It is more costly to build underground roads than surface roads and, unlike the TPE, the KPE is a largely underground road – three-quarters of the KPE are underground.
You may like to refer to the following Straits Times article for more detailed coverage on the cost of building the KPE:
