Hi,

SNOC came into existence in 1970 when its predecessor the Singapore Olympic and Sports Council (SOSC) was dissovled and became SNOC . At SNOC’s inaugural meeting, the late Mr Barker was elected its President. Hence, it is not incorrect to say that he was the first President of SNOC.

To avoid confusion, however, we’ll amend the article to remove the word “first”.

Mr E W Barker was not the first President of the Singapore National Olympic Council. The SNOC was established in 1947 while Mr Barker was President in 1970. There were a few before him. The first president of the Council was acting Colonial Secretary H.P. Bryson, who was quickly followed by Andrew Gilmour, who served from 1948 to 1951.

Actually, Amelia Earhart made the comment on Kallang Airport in 1937. The year in the newspaper article, 1938, is incorrect. This is because Earhart went missing on 2 July, 1937, and was never found(hence impossible for her to make comments in 1938).

I believe there might have been an ice-works well before the time in your article. I have an 1898 Singapore map that shows an ‘ice-works’ at the junction of North Boat Quay and River Valley Road by the river, see ‘Return to Singapore’ page on my website. Also an Australian who was a Director of the RAGM Ltd established a cold storage company in 1903 in Singapore. I suppose it depends upon what you mean by ‘ice-works’.

The Malaya Who’s Who 1937, listed Ung Ban Hoe of Penang was a Queens Scholar recipient in 1913. But then, the Scholarship was discontinued until Dr Lim Boon Kheng fought for it in 1931. I wonder if Ung Ban Hoe benifited fron other category of the Scholarships?

Yes, the US Embassy used to be located at 30 Hill Street and not 31 Hill Street. We’ve verified this from old copies of the Diplomatic and Consular List published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Thanks for pointing out the error.
