Teo Eng Seng (b.14 December 1938, Singapore -), received the Cultural Medallion Award in 1986. His path-breaking invention of the paperdyesculp medium ranks as one of the most significant achievements of the so-called second-generation artists. Such heights are only to be expected from an artist whom the Singapore Free Press in 1960 called “the first schoolboy in Singapore to hold a one-man art exhibition”. The determination shown by the young Teo from his remarkable decision to hitch-hike across Asia and Europe to pursue his studies in England in 1961, is matched by the no less strategic declaration of 1979 to abandon oil painting. Since then, Teo's experimentation with paperdyesculp has led to the medium of plastic waste, and he has also extended his oeuvre to include both performance and installation art.
